“You have no real idea what joy you bring to our lives”: Stories from group music therapy with people living with dementia and their carers

Now in its third year, Together in Sound is a partnership project between the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research at Anglia Ruskin University and Saffron Hall Trust, a community-focused concert hall and arts charity in rural Essex in the UK. It delivers group music therapy to people living with dementia and their carers or companions. The project was developed in response to a need expressed by members of the local community for increased access to music for people living with dementia.

Narrative inquiry and practice-based, arts-informed approaches aim to uncover the impact of the music therapy groups for participants. This presentation will focus on the nature of particular music therapy experiences that are impactful for participants. Findings will be shared in the form of participants’ stories, improvisation and song-writing.
